As a future time I may look at expanding VDS support to allow known problematic network drivers in upper memory, so if you can send something which demonstrates the problem, that would be good. The files should provide a way to definitively detect that things are failing, if a crash isn't evident.
The FreeDOS machine has a VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter according to XP device manager. Red Hat calls it a VT6102 (Rhine II). I hope that lies within the realm of your known card drivers.
