I used HIMEM.EXE on 2 GB machines. It works fine, although
I choose to limit it to 1GB with the MAX= parameter because it
was more likely to run out of handles. 
I settled for "/numhandles=64 /max=1000000" on my boot disks,
assuming that "1GB should be enough for anyone" paraphrasing
a certain Basic programmer        ;-)
