Shane's web site (and apparently any work) is down for more than a year, just a very vague hint about some "secrets" to come "soon". And the Sourceforge page hasn't seen any update/news since '08 either... Looks quite dead to me. Not sure though what the couple other people that at some point seemed to be involved in keeping GEM alive are still up to...
