Some other interesting links are: https://github.com/relan/exfat and: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT#Adoption which states that one of the drivers is by Samsung, then GPL-ed, but claims that all drivers might conflict with Microsoft patents. I remember that for VFAT and FAT32, it turned out that supporting the filesystem itself by universal-purpose free operating systems like Linux or FreeDOS is no problem, as Microsoft explicitly gave permission for that category of use years ago. How about ExFAT? The wikipedia piece also lists tricks to use exFAT on DOS already. And that, interestingly, ExFAT lacks short file names and "."/"..".
