If you are new to developing for DOS, you should get a good understanding of 
how DOS works.

If you have only developed things for Windows, it is quite different. It is not 
complicated or 
hard, just different. I’d recommend getting a book that covers programming for 
DOS in assembly 
language. You can find tons of them cheap on eBay and Amazon. 

While I suggest getting a DOS assembly book, you don’t need one. There are loads
of great resources available on the internet.
