Sorry, but that is pretty much nonsense. All the drivers that I know used direct memory/register access, with the exception of the VESA drivers, maybe.

But that is in the very nature of the beast. If you try to be "cross-compatible", you have to make compromises. And those might result in a somewhat slower performance than specialized code, for one particular use case (hardware)...
