Hi Paul,

So you can only access it using ELTORITO after booting?
If you cannot enable some SATA legacy mode, you could
use the AHCICD driver here:

https://rloewelectronics.com/distribute/AHCICD/1.1/

It is now freely available, as the author has, alas, died:

Interestingly, that does not look like something in JEMMEX
or JEMM386, so it could be some controller BIOS which tries
to switch to protected mode to prepare for reboot? Can you
give some more context with debug and with mem?

You can also try the JEMMEX or JEMM386 option "ALTBOOT",
although I am not sure whether all versions really use it.

Oh okay.

So the game first works, but you get a hang
when you try to return to the DOS prompt?

Oh...

The thing is that MPXPLAY is new, so it does know new
soundcards :-) The docs say: SB16, ESS, WSS (Crystal or
Yamaha), GUS, SB 1/2/Pro, CMI 8338, CMI 8738, Intel ICH
0 to 7, NVIDIA NForce 1 to 3, Intel HDA (AD19xx, ATI, VIA
and Realtek), SB PCI 16, 64 and 128 Ensoniq, SB Live and
PCI 512 EMU10k, SB Audigy 1 EMU10k, SB Audigy 2 CA0108 or
EMU10k, SB Live 24, SB Live Audigy LS CA0106 and SB X-Fi
Xtreme audio and VIA 82686, VIA 8233, VIA 8235, VIA 8237
are supported. I guess your chip is "Intel HDA" or ICH2:

http://mpxplay.sourceforge.net/

The docs also explain that you can either use DOS/4G or
DOS/32a, the latter can use more RAM but can crash e.g.
with SB Live when that one uses the SB 16 emulator driver.

That EMU10DOS driver is quite interesting, because it can
create a virtual SB16 for your other games, but I am not
sure whether it works with any of our EMM386 variants. It
ships with some of the SB PCI sound cards with EMU10k. Not
something you have to worry about with MPXPLAY, of course,
because MPXPLAY works directly without that driver :-)

Maybe again the BIOS trying to do something in protected
mode, conflicting with the use of JEMMEX or JEMM386? But
the value of CS is strange, could also be another error.

Eric
