Hello, All:

I'm hoping this is an appropriate place to discuss this--if not,
please forgive a newby! I'm a list owner myself & I definitely don't
want to wear out my welcome before I even get started, but looking
thru the archives kind of made me think maybe this topic would be ok.

One of the uses for FreeDos *not* included on the homepage is computer
forensics. In order to prevent accidental writes to a disk, it's
really critical that certain aspects of an examination, especially
that of imaging, be performed in a dos environment. I'm getting DMA
boundary errors when attempting to run some forensics programs.
Neither MSDos nor Udo Kuhnt's DrDos/OpenDos gives me these. Bug #698
references this problem, as does my bug #1952. I have read the
comments regarding bug 698 debating whether in fact this is a "bug".
I would submit that it is, both because other versions of dos which
FreeDos emulates filter out this error & because it significantly
impairs FreeDos's ability to function as an OS under which forensics
work could otherwise be done.

I've done some C programming but have never braved getting into the
guts of an operating system. By the time I figure out how to correct
the problem, I'll probably have retired long since. Might anyone more
knowledgeable than I be willing to address this, or shall I consider
myself on my own? I'd happily test solutions. Also, if there's
anything I can do to make this easier, please let me know that as
well.

Again, I hope I've posted this to the correct forum, &, if not, yall
please don't yell at me too loud lol.

Many blessings for the holiday season.
