I think this is almost always a good idea to do!  My rule of thumb at work is 
that the more information you can automatically record at build time, the 
better.  Of course, there might be some limit to how much space you want to 
take up in the kernel :)

Yes, you definitely need some indication of whether the build is "official".

I assume that "official" means the nightly build in this case?  Normally I 
would suggest that you would want to use 'svnversion' and verify that there are 
no "M" or "S" suffixes or colons in the output which would suggest that the 
build is from anything other than a single unmodified revision, but if the only 
builds for which a revision number are stored are builds where you know for 
sure that the working copy is checked out from a single unmodified revision, I 
guess that isn't required.
