An issue is that there isn't a full FreeDOS Live CD.  There are images
you can boot from, but they are installers that assume you will
install FreeDOS and add the rest once you have.

Not for FreeDOS.  I just did it to dual boot Linux and WinXP on a
netbook.  Booting an Linux Live CD from DVD didn't work, likely
because it's an older and slow DVD drive, so I installed the ISO on a
thumbdrive and booted from that instead.

In my case, I used the As Easy As 123 product from PendriveLinux.com,
which is intended to put a Linux ISO on a thumbdrive.  It has support
for many common ISOs out of the box, but can install a custom ISO that
it not in it's list.  I see no reason why it couldn't be used for
FreeDOS.  See
