Yes the Intel VESA BIOS omits a lot of the 16-color high-res graphics modes = 4 bits per pixel, I'd say 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 . I used to like a particular piece of software that was rather comfy in those modes. Which in the meantime has become irrelevant. Most legacy discrete VGA chips do support those modes just fine. In the old days I used to have a tool called VTEST.EXE... I wonder where it came from... UNIVBE maybe?
