Did not find any that does not require extra buffers for decompression, is fast on a 8088 and can be implemented within some 20 lines of C. Maybe I didn't look hard enough.
MVCOMP is not that new BTW, it is already used for compressing NLS strings in SvarLANG (the CATS/Kitten equivalent in SvarDOS, also used by Free FDISK).
As I prefer the ZIPped htmlhelp, I would say having compressed AMB helps the competition :-)
htmlhelp is a very impressive piece of machinery, but hardly usable on pre-386 PCs. Plus, HTML is a little too verbose to my taste, and easy to mess up when edited by hand. But to each their own.
