Not only confusing but also more than occasionally non-functional - at
least in my experience.  After persevering for much longer than made
sense I gave up on Github's Web UI almost completely.  Nowadays when I
can I use git and 'gitk' (which I heartily recommend) from an xterm.

This leaves Github providing more or less just a file store and a
means to have the occasional chat with any other interested parties.
It seems to be able to manage that.

To be fair to Github (although I really don't see why I should be) it
would probably work better for me if I used Windows, but that's never
going to happen.
