Well, this is a "pull" protocol instead of the "push" protocol internet mail 
uses.  I think.

Not so much work that it couldn't be automated and left to run overnight.

That's what the whole rest of that rambling email was about!  You check 
everybody you're expecting mail from, then you check one or more semi-public 
maildrops (I call them servers in the other email) for mail from people you 
don't know.  If someone tries to flood you, it gets stopped before it fills 
your mailbox, and if an evil maildrop tries to flood you, you just stop 
polling it.
