Dear Sir:

I am an Iranian physician and computer programmer
(C/C++,DOS/Windows)  with special interest  in
mathematics and artificial intelligence(expert
systems).
I designed a primitive Medical Expert System known
as "Smart Family Planning" capable of helping medical
staff to make decision for conception control. This
expert system has been prepared within several months
of scattered 10 hours/week work, and requires
Windows95 or higher .
As a next plan, I have in mind to design a mature
system capable of inferential, deductive and
probabilistic thinking. such an expert system can be
successfully and effectively prepared for a variety
of other medical problems, a few of them are:

1.Electrolytes Acid-Base Balance.
2.Dx and workup of inborn errors of metabolism.
3.workup of failure to thrive.
4.Emergencies (e.g. Dx and management of MI,)
5.Interpretation of lab tests(ABG,coagulation,CBC,..).
6.work up of consciousness abnormalities.
7.Etc. (many subjects...)

Expert systems if designed carefully can be, more
rapid, precise and comprehensive, in some conditions
than a human and present , "alert" , "restless" ,
multipliable , "inexpensive" and even , "life
saving" ( in emergency cases ) or problem solving
(e.g., fluid therapy) specialists ( or counselors )
leading to; lower iatrogenic consequences and
improved healthcare. Expert systems make expert
knowledge portable and put this power at the disposal
of(or help) decision makers.
I believe, under the title of Medical Expert
Systems these projects deserve to be mentioned as
national or even global, because they may change the
strategy of medical care (of course , with the
progresses in software technology sooner or later this
change is going to appear !) . So I think this title
should be included in program list of any herald
scientific organization and, researchers should be
faced beyond  the limitations as;
membership,nationality, politicalconsiderations,
recommendation , organization , etc. Generally,
designing of medical intelligent systems are somehow
difficult mainly because of the nature of the subject
(medicine), and some groups ( computer specialists
plus physicians ) may not gain good results. This
mind consuming highly scientific projects can be
carried out by some enthusiastic scientists, free
of limitations.
If you are interested, I can send you further needed
information and a detailed article containing
technical concepts about, or even a free copy of my
primitive expert system; "Smart Family Planning" by
post or e-mail.
I am both a physician and a scientific computer
programmer and My opinion is ;The expert, designed by
an expert will be more expert.

Depending on subject, It takes 1 to 2 years to
design a really intelligent system and 0.5 to 2
years to make knowledge base for each of them. I need
some fund to spare my time (about 35 to 40 hours/week)
and develop my research but I do not know, from whom
and how, I can provide my needed budget. The most
regretfully, local government is not familiar with the
above scientific concept and its benefits.

With best wishes,

Babak Mohammadi, M. D
