I have:-

/usr/lib/mysql
(files like libmysqlclient.a are in there)

/var/lib/mysql
(files like mysql.sock are there, plus the dbs in subdirectories)

/usr/include/mysql
(files like mysql.h are there)

And I have mysqld in /usr/sbin

Your mileage may vary.
