Nevermind, the radius/mysql blew up this afternoon (not sure which but either way the system stopped authenticating) and after it came back up it was working fine, so i guess i did it right, just something didn't pick up the settings when it should have. when i was restarting it, it did complain about port already in use, so i'm guessing something was a bit buggy with the stop/restart script i'm using.
