Im not exactly sure how realms work myself.. I don't think there is anything you can do with them that you cant do with groups, or something else. As with Perl, TMTOWTDI.
I'm experimenting with the same thing myself, for 1800 access. After reading through the docs last week I got very excited reading about the feature of embedded Perl (and python) interpreters, which prompted me to upgrade. Python apparently came first, and is definitely better documented. More to the point the included example Python module is prepaid.py, which is what it sounds. As an authorize module it checks a database for the amount of remaining time for that user, and if it is >0, both reports OK, and sets the sessionTimeout to that value.
