Okay...new info here (and a Thanks to Kostas)
after compiling with --enable-developer i decided to try to run radius with all defaults and lo and behold, she starts. did the radtest and recieved the expected outputs. hmmm...
so, now i'm going to go through the changes i made (to clients.conf, sql.conf, users, radiusd.conf) one at a time and see where it dies.
