There is a DEFAULT entry setting Auth-Type System in users file. Comment it out.

It looks like the password is not checked against the radcheck table. There I added the user with attribute "User-Password", op ":=" and a password value. I also added another user to the users file and that user is accepted. This is with the old freeradius 1.0.1, but I hope the problem I have is just a simple user configuration error.
