If I connect and specify my keymap as below once connected pressing the down
cursor on my keyboard toggles the start menu to appear + disappear but with no
output on the console. Pressing the windows meta key which does nothing does
produce the expected keycode=33 on the console.

Can you explain in more details what the problem is?
Can you show us the console output when you run xfreerdp?
Which desktop/window manager are you using?
Which keyboard layout(s) are you using?
