We run a perl script that checks if the servers are responding to  
requests.  It can send OPTIONS, and PING requests to various servers  
periodically.  If the response it gets back isn't correct, it can send  
e-mail.  It'll keep testing and send an e-mail again when the system is  
working again.  It's defaults setup for testing sipXecs servers, but it's  
easy enough to set the various command line arguments to point it at  
FreeSWITCH directly.
