I think codec2 is making wonderful progress. I also think the current
strategy of implementing this as a HF modem compatible with most SSB
transceivers is the right path, since there is no real competitor
for this, we have the advantage of being "first".

I also think this approach is suitable for  VHF/UHF, and the ability
to run this over a standard FM channel is worth much more in adoption
than a few dB extra in performance.

Implementing this as "audio over a FM channel" allows the use of
low cost handhelds for creating hotspots, repeaters etc etc.

This is of course a "market adoption" perspective, rather than my
favorite angle, the technical side. 

If the first platform is a PC with two sound cards, running Linux or
Win, then the second should be something that can be integrated with
a rig, and allow mobile / portable use. A EVB style card with suitable
firmware would do it fine.

>From there on, I feel there will be a myriad of implementations by hams
experimenting with SDR, digital modes etc etc. 

Let the experimentation and competition begin.
