If the code doesn't use a definition now, it's probably something
autotools puts in and we've never even looked at it.
The most important thing you could do would be to try other platforms
and make them work. With virtualization this is pretty easy these days.
You can run all of the Linux, BSD, and Windows platforms in a virtual
partition and only Windows needs a paid license. MacOS needs its own
hardware, but looks a lot like BSD except for the GUI.
