We don't know. Often this sort of thing starts with a university
project, and there's public funding of the research, and the University
gives one company monopoly rights on the patents rather than giving them
back to the public that paid for the research. Even Google started that way.
So, maybe it's more fair to say that you weren't ripped off this time.
