Additional stuff I had to do:

     yum install xorg-x11-xauth
     yum install xorg-x11-fonts-100dpi xorg-x11-fonts-75dpi
xorg-x11-fonts-ISO8859-1-100dpi xorg-x11-fonts-ISO8859-1-75dpi
xorg-x11-fonts-Type1 xorg-x11-fonts-misc

Without the first I couldn't get an X11 display across an SSH connection.

Without the second the FreeDV window came up with mostly rectangles instead of
letters. The fonts chosen are still not "pretty", but that can probably be
rectified by adding more font packages yet. As-is it's very useable/readable.
