I think many are attracted to the ESP-32 for it's built-in wireless. At least a lot of hobbyists mention that in their builds. The AX5043 radio chip is maybe more interesting than the microcontroller. Seems like anything would suffice. If I read the docs correctly, it looks like it can do frequency hopping with FSK.
