As previously mentioned our NSW country Ambulance service is trialing HF digital as a way to fill in the many many black spots in the hilly terrain here. Satellite phone is not an option as they are legislated to have an independent non-commercial comms system. I met with one of their paramedics out in the country and he was very interested in comms and even had our amateur repeater finder app on his phone. If HF can get out of valleys to "anywhere" a skip distance away and there's a receiver there, we have comms. So as well as vehicles, they have fitted out 50+ country town stations with the HF digital gear. It's nothing especially sophisticated, just a radio, automatic ATU and antenna. The protocol, TWELP 1200. If we had here perhaps five stations spread up our east coast, Melbourne to Cairns, I believe we could have a lot of fun.
