The guy using the freetrade as his store wants to start over with the
invoices since there were quite a few used for orders tests and a few that
seem to have vanished.

Perhaps you have a good reason to do this. I really do not find it likely
though. Assuming that you have a good reason you need to write a script.
The script should update each existing invoice with some sort of prefix.
The script should also make sure that if the invoice number is referenced
anywhere else (customer history or something like that) that the invoice
number is updated. Then you can start over with one. If you start over at
one with out getting rid of all traces of the old invoice numbers you will
wind up with duplicate invoice numbers and would deserve to be spanked. And
not by anyone from whom a spanking may be a good thing. You could update
all the invoice numbers and references to them manually but that would
introduce quite a bit of room for human error.
Why are you wanting to restart at one? Is this just an arbitrary decision
or will restarting at one some how improve performance or customer service?
