Yes, this is normal because LCD rendering requires padding to deal with color fringes. This used to be the case only with FT_CONFIG_OPTION_SUBPIXEL_RENDERING defined. Otherwise the LCD target was actually grayscale without padding. Since 2.8.1, the LCD target is always optimized for LCD and, therefore, padded.
