Thank you for the additional background information. As I know a bit about font creation, I do agree that there is hard work in creating a Multiple Master typeface with a reasonably large character set and a wide range of scalability.

I'd also rather use embedded fonts, but the source formats do not support this. So, font substitution with fitted glyphs is the only remaining solution.

I am still hoping someone can give me an idea how to accomplish this with FreeType.

Or would Adobe's donated font rasterizer, separate from FreeType, suit the problem better?
