MeBox may not be clever, but it has a couple things going for it:
- It's short and easy to spell.
- It's more or less obvious to pronounce.
- The meaning is in the name: Media Box
Beacon is a bit more clever, but it's also obscure. But that's ok,
because beacon isn't for end users. And neither is this thing whose
name we're trying to come up with right now, so I suppose we could
afford a more obscure name.
So, first, let's define this thing. It is an umbrella for a bunch of
projects whose main common attribute is that they involve media in some
way. We have pyimlib2, a graphics library; pyevas, a canvas; some
display code for X11; beacon if I ever get to work on it; mmpython and
pywebinfo maybe? We're making a library that is useful for writing an
app that has to deal with multimedia in some way. Shared Media
Application Toolset Repository was actually pretty descriptive. :)
Python Media Framework isn't so bad, but PMF reminds me of PMS when I
read it. :) Media Application Software Kit, or Mask? I liked SMART
better :)
Or we could get more obscure. It's an umbrella project, so let's look
up the word umbrella for ideas. Thesaurus suggests "canopy." That's
not a bad name except that it maybe reminds too many people of SCO. So
what does an umbrella look like? If we graph a parabola, it looks like
am umbrella. But that doesn't lead us to any good names. Let's see
wikipedia's entry on umbrella:
The word "umbrella" is from the Latin word "umbra" for shade or
shadow.
And
"Brolly" is a slang word for umbrella, used often in Britain
(both the word, and the object).
I'm not big on either Umbra or Brolly, but maybe other languages will
yield a cool name for that word. :) Or Pyumbra, which is ...
interesting. :)
