I can't speak to the skin subsystem, but I can say that the underlying
canvas architecture will have no technical limitations that I can think
of (except for possibly CPU limitations). Whatever you can imagine in
terms of design and layout, or even how video itself interacts with the
application, the canvas should be able to do. It will be possible to
put video on the canvas, so if you want an interface that has a small
thumbnail view of the video (even translucent if you like) in the corner
while you're navigating the menus, and when you're done and want to view
the video, it can slide and zoom and fade back in as it goes to full
screen, the canvas will make all this possible.

Now I don't know if the skin system will. I think if you have a
specific need for some feature, dischi or someone else could probably
add it, but I don't want to speak for him. :)

I disagree about blue being depressing, but I agree about blue being
overused. But, for me, blue seems to be the best color for prolonged
use. Every now and then I get tired of how my desktop looks (and it
usually has a blue-toned wallpaper), so I go and find something new. I
run that for a week or two, but I inevitably tire of it quickly and go
back to a blue theme. :)

It says something extremely sad about the state of the USPTO that I
can't tell if you're joking or not. :)

Tivo has some pretty varying color schemes that aren't blue and I think
look pretty good.

There was a ReplayTV (IIRC) screenshot I saw that had gorgeous people
and blue tones. It inspired me to create this design for MeBox:

I'm not sure if I'll end up using that design -- if and when I ever get
to the point of working directly on MeBox again -- but I still like it.
It's not blue, but it's still soft and friendly but modern. (I'm not a
designer, so I can only copy good ideas from other places. I think I'm
pretty good at recreating pixels from what I see, but not so good at
coming up with new ideas.)

Cheers,
Jason.
