Here are some of my beefs with other distros:
1) Ubuntu defaults to GNOME which I can't stand.
Why not try Kubuntu which defaults with KDE or Xubuntu which defaults with XFCE (my choice in a very responsive desktop). Once you get any type of Ubuntu installed, you can run automatix ( http://www.getautomatix.com/) which sets up all DVD and MP3 needs.
I personally use Slackware for all my Freevo needs (alot of compiling but worth it IMO) and Xubuntu for all my desktop needs. I used Red Hat about 4 years ago and hate RPMs; apt-get has never given me the problems that RPMs have but alot has happend in 4 years.
