I found the problem but I don't know how or why it's a problem. I added the
following code to play xm streams in src/audio/plugins/mplayer.py

if str(filename).find(".jsp?") >= 0:
  is_playlist=True

which worked fine on one of my two boxes. So I ended up replacing the code
above with the code below and it works on both. I have no idea why but it
works now.

if str(filename).find(".jsp?") >= 0:
  filename=filename.replace('"','')
  is_playlist=True

This is by far the strangest thing i've encountered.
