I was wrong on this one.  Hal *does* complain because /dev/hdc *is* 
(indirectly via the /dev/cdrom symlink, which it seems to recognize) in 
fstab.  Now eat that.  When I remove the drive from my fstab completely, the 
beacon-daemon works.
