Well... what can I say... Forget all my problems with the screensaver and osd, at least for now. The old version (svn 2-3 days old) crashed, so I did a clean reinstall. I deleted all files under site-packages and reinstalled the old freevo. Didn't work. So installed REL-1_8_3 and it's the one I have now. No screensaver problems now. But also no new volume bar (I enjoyed it for a few days) and no nice shutdown dialog, just the usual one. I guess you know what I mean.
