I just checked the mplayer manpages: both the manpage of 1.0rc2 and the debian-multimedia manpage don't mention the outdir option for -vo png (only for jpeg and pnm). According to the mplayer svn log (of DOCS/man/en/mplayer.1) the -vo png outdir option was introduced in r27650 (2008-09-20). I guess it would be best if freevo wouldn't require this option until it's in an official mplayer release.
