I noticed a pretty similar behavior (large shares over samba shares updating/caching very slow)... it alsa was about a 100g, but mostly big avi's so there weren't more then 100-150 files to cache. I did notice that mmpython cached avi's of japanese origin or so VERY slowly (half a minute or longer per file). I guess it some character map/locale/codepage thing with windows<->linux... i think it's more a samba issue then an mmpython one. My experience with samba is full of weird things.
