Are you running as root? i have seen people have problems with runapp trying to set negative nice numbers if they aren't root(which is not allowed on linux). It tends to set the nice to a positive number instead and actually degrades performance.
As for DVD's are you setting in local_conf.py: MPLAYER_DVD_PROTECTION = 1 no idea on the ripping and deleting.
