A 400mhz will let you get away with playing movies/TV or Recording but
not both simultaneously, since the CPU will be almost maxed out.

I use samba to save my files on a remote machine, but this requires 100bT.
10bT doesn't cut it. I don't know how permissions and locking
(or lack there of on nfs) will effect freevo.

I don't know what you mean by slots. 
You should look in to the webserver/record server, it lets you point and
click to record TV shows. The layout is similar to zap2it.com.

If your interested in  playing the videos on your TV, Freevo is set up
to play videos through some Videocards with TV-Out and Hollywood +/
Creative DXR3 cards.
