Check your tv-card module (using lsmod). Look for bttv (the typical
case), or saa7134. Is it loaded on startup?

Normally running tv-apps like mplayer should trigger an automatic
load of the module. Otherwise, you can insert a
'modprobe <tv-card-module-name>' into your rc.local.
