Maybe the workaround creating symlinks is helpfull for you, too.

 for i in [starting_with_a]
        ln -s $i /anotherdir/a/$i

im sure there is a way to improve this (so you dont have to do with with
every letter)...but im not firm about shell-scripting, sorry.
