Thanks for all your replies. To find more info about the problem, I tried to start the mplayer from the command line. It works perfectly all right.
Then I added DEBUG=1 and CHILD_DEBUG=1 to local_conf.py and started freevo. Below is the log when I once choose a songtitle and hit enter to start it playing. It looks like mplayer is started with every songfile in the directory.
