MPLAYER_VO_DEV = 'xv'
gives me a good result , not centred, only trouble is needing to alter the a-v
sync.
can this (av -200ms) go into one of the mplayer args?

MPLAYER_VO_DEV = CONF.display
gives me more than the cpu can cope with with Xorg taking 60% of the cpu
audio way ahead of picture, and when the picture gets to the point where the
sound started the sound dies and picture breaks up into square tiles

channel tuning is occurring ok

have done so, thanks for the hint

and my recording problem went away when i rebooted the machine - i hadn't
restarted the recordserver after altering the VIDEO_GROUPS.
reading the logs did help me there.
