I don't know if this helps.  What I did was the other way around.  I used the 
alsa a52 plugin to convert PCM audio to digital audio.
I get the added advantage (or disadvantage maybe to some audiophiles) of 
converting 2 channel audio to 6 channel audio and getting
my stereo music out all speakers.

So, everything which goes to the receiver is always in ac3 digital.
