GNU tar is broken and we deliberately removed the dependency on it
a few days(!) ago. This is the fallout you see from the time before
you were developer which we didn't have a chance to fix yet.
Suggestion, from a similar issue with libpcap:
+EXTRACT_CMD:= mkdir -p ${WRKDIR}; cd ${WRKDIR}; \
+ gzip -dc ${DISTFILES} | pax -r \
+ -s '!\(libpcap-$(PKG_VERSION)\)/\.!\1!'
