Not in shell scripts, where you use feature tests, etc.
I prefer having some error messages over not having network
at all because it breaks, plus it makes the scripts more
readable. (Besides, I've never seen set -u used ANYWHERE until
now, I even had to look it up in the manual...)

No flame, just maintainability.
