Because v5 does not run Linux anymore. Linksys changed their mind and run 
VxWorks on the newer hardware. And VxWorks just needs 2Mb memory to boot 
(AFAIR), linux needs 4Mb.

Brainslayer (dd-wrt-developer) managed to got dd-wrt-Linux running on a 
v5-hardware, but it is not straightforward for "unexperienced" users. You 
have to fiddle around with the JTAG-Interface. Read about it here:
