Complexity is one of the premises behind the book Jurassic Park, by
Michael Crighton, made into a movie with Jeff Goldblum as the
mathematician (a chaos theorist).
The idea put forth by the mathematician in the book (and to some
extent
this is preserved in the movie), is that a complex system cannot be
controlled, so something is bound to go wrong in Jurassic Park.
I vaguely remember Doyne Farmer saying that Jeff Goldblum had
called him
up to talk about how to play his role in the movie.
